On Saturday night at around 10:30pm, Ed and I were in the car on our way to get bubble tea (or boba, if you live south of the Canadian border) and unfortunately, we got a flat tire. Ed and I have never experienced a flat tire before, so we were a tad confused as to how to go about changing the tire and replacing it with a spare. Luckily, we had the car’s instructional manual on hand in the glove compartment and 3G to search up a “How To Change A Tire” YouTube video (come on, you have to admit that YouTube is helpful in any situation). After a few hiccups and the filming of 3 Vine videos (username: Kels), we learnt all about the different parts of the car, we managed to replace the damaged tire, and we were back on the road in under an hour.
Being the anxious, worrywart that I am, that night I was looking through my makeup collection and began thinking about whether or not I had any products that I would use if I had a “beauty crisis” (yes, those do exist and they range from eyeliner smudging under the eyes, to foundation transferring onto clothing). The “pick me, pick me” beauty crisis that kept popping into my mind was my constant struggle with dry, flaky lips that I experience often during extreme weather conditions (when it’s unbearably hot and when it’s frigid cold).
Having dry, flaky lips is always frustrating, but luckily there are many solutions to take care of this beauty crisis. Up until last winter, I was a devout Lush-ie (Lush-er?) and obsessively had to have a full stock of the Lush lip sugar scrub jars next to my sink in my bathroom. In January, while making a list of my New Year’s resolutions (yes, I’m THAT kind of person), I tried to see where I could cut down my makeup spending habits and I realized that I didn’t have to spend $10 on 25g of the sugar lip scrub because I could easily make my own for a fraction of the price. So how do you make this simple sugar lip scrub with ingredients that you probably will already have in your kitchen pantry? Keep on reading for the recipe that your lips and your wallet will be thanking me for!
What you’ll need:
1 mini glass jar
1 small mixing bowl
1 tablespoon of brown sugar
1 tablespoon of honey
1/2 tablespoon of olive oil
Step 1: Pour the brown sugar, honey, and olive oil in to the mixing bowl
Step 2: Mix well until the ingredients are thoroughly combined
(optional step) Add more sugar if you desire a grainer texture – the more sugar you add, the harsher the scrub
Step 3: Pour the mixture into a glass jar (it will keep for around 2 weeks)
How to use your sugar lip scrub:
*tip – do the following steps over a sink because it can get messy!
Step 1: Apply a quarter size amount onto your lips
Step 2: Gently massage it into your lips for 1 minute.
Step 3: Remove with a damp towel and apply your favorite moisturizing lip balm.
There you have it, a recipe for soft, flake-free lips! I know that dry, flaky lips aren’t a problem in the summer for a large majority of people, but keep this post in mind (and bookmarked on your computer) so that when cooler weather approaches, you can easily make this sugar lip scrub instead of having to buy one at Lush (or at any other beauty store). This sugar lip scrub will definitely become your holy grail product and it will also make your lip color last twice as long.
